Lyme Disease is the most serious tick-borne disease in Massachusetts. Symptoms often begin with a distinctive rash that starts as a red bump that then spreads outward, clearing in the center to form a ring. Flu-like symptoms are likely to follow. Symptoms may clear up on their own but should be treated to avoid recurrence and serious health issues. Early treatment is vital.
According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, people who do not receive treatment will most likely develop other symptoms that could begin even years later. Nervous system disorders that include meningitis and Bell’s palsy are common, also weakness or pain that can shift between mild and severe. Sixty percent will develop arthritis.
Deer ticks are capable of spreading more than one type of germ in a single bite. Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis are two other tick-borne diseases common in Massachusetts.
Babesiosis is caused by a microscopic parasite that infects red blood cells. Most people experience only mild symptoms. Severe symptoms, which can be fatal, are most common in the elderly and individuals without a healthy spleen or with a compromised immune system.
Anaplasmosis, or human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), is caused by bacteria, so can be treated with antibiotics. Symptoms typically occur one to two weeks following infection and include fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue. Joint aches, cough, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting are also possible. A headache associated with HGA infection often will not improve with over-the-counter medication.
